He is a Dutch Medical Doctor with a doctorate in Pulmonary Pharmacology from Utrecht University. His main line of research concerns tissue engineering for medical and alimentation purposes. In the medical field, he works on the manufacture of blood vessels that can be used as grafts in coronary arterial bypasses. In the food industry, he developed beef from stem cells in bovine osseous muscles in order to complement and even replace the traditional way in which beef is produced in farms. In 2013, during a live TV program in London, he cooked and tasted the first artificial hamburger prepared in vitro.
He is currently dedicated to improving and increasing cultivated beef production by standing as science director and co-founder of three companies that work in the production of tissue engineering for beef and leather. He is also co-author of 165 articles published in the world’s main scientific journals.
