Dean Kamen is an inventor, entrepreneur and a tireless advocate of science and technology. His roles as inventor and advocate are intertwined in his own passion for technology and its practical uses to improve the world we live in. As an inventor, he holds more than 440 U.S. and foreign patents, many of them for innovative medical devices that have expanded the frontiers of healthcare worldwide. During his studies at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute he invented the first wearable infusion pump, which rapidly gained acceptance from diverse medical fields. Furthermore, Kamen has invented the prosthetic arm Luke, whose goal is to improve the quality of life for returning injured soldiers. Among his most notable inventions are the iBOT, an all-terrain electric wheelchair, and the Segway Human Transporter.
During his career, Kamen created AutoSyringe, Inc., a company that created medical devices including the first insulin infusion pump for diabetics. After selling AutoSyringe, Inc. Kamen founded DEKA Research & Development Corporation which develops medical inventions and provides important medical research for major corporate clients.
In addition to DEKA, Kamen founded FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an organization dedicated to motivating the next generations to understand, use and enjoy science and technology. Founded in 1989, FIRST has supported more than 300,000 young people in more than 60 countries around the world to achieve their dreams and study topics related to science and technology.
