He is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physics at Princeton University and a specialist in the spectroscopy of atoms and molecules, radiation propagation in the atmosphere and spin-polarized atoms and nuclei. He invented the sodium guide star that is used in astronomical adaptive optics to correct for the degrading effects of atmospheric turbulence.
He is the Chair of the Board of the Richard Lounsbery Foundation and he is the President of the CO2 Coalition. Since 1976 he has been a member of JASON, a group of scientists who advise agencies of the Federal Government on matters of defense, intelligence, energy policy and other technical problems.
He served as Director of Energy Research in the United States Department of Energy from 1991 to 1993. He was a trustee of the MITRE Corporation from 1993 to 2011. In 1994 he was a Co-founder of Magnetic Imaging Technologies Incorporated (MITI), a small company that produced laser-polarized noble gases for magnetic resonance imaging.
He has published over 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the United States National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, and other scientific organizations.
