Susana Martínez-Conde

“We need a brain the size of a building to perceive reality accurately.”

Susana Martínez-Conde majored in experimental psychology at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and obtained her PhD in medicine and surgery from the neuroscience program at the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. She received her postdoctoral training from the Nobel Laureate Prof. David Hubel at Harvard Medical School, where she was later an instructor in neurobiology.

Currently she is a Professor of Ophthalmology, Neurology, and Physiology and Pharmacology at the State University of New York. She is best known for her studies on illusions, eye movements and perception, neurological disorders, and attentional misdirection in stage magic.

Susana complements her award-winning research with a extensive science communication, education and public outreach. She presides the Neural Correlate Society, which hosts the annual Best Illusion of the Year Contest, now in its 11th edition.

Susana writes frequently for Scientific American and has a regular column in Scientific American Mind on the neuroscience of illusion. Among her distinctions are the Eyetrack Award for her research on Parkinsonian patients, and the 100 Spaniards Prize. She is the 2014 recipient of the Science Educator Award, given by the international Society for Neuroscience (40,000 members) to an outstanding neuroscientist who has made significant contributions to educating the public.
