“The lack of human rights has stopped Cubans from taking charge of themselves”
Rosa María Payá is CEO of Fundación para la Democracia Panamericana and the Chairwoman of the Latin American Youth Network for Democracy present in 23 countries. Her objective is to encourage international solidarity with Cuba and seek justice for the assassination of her father, Oswaldo Payá, who received the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize and was a five time nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize. She currently coordinates the international campaign “Cuba Decides”, which campaigns for the implementation of a plebiscite in favor of free pluralistic elections in Cuba for the first time in 67 years.
She holds a degree in Physics from the University of Havana and graduated from Georgetown University, Washington DC, from the Global Competitive Leadership program and the Summer Institute on the Constitution. She is a pro-democratic activist, has lead civil society activities within Cuba since 2009, and took part in the coordination team of the Christian Liberation Movement (MCL). Furthermore, she has been a member of the editorial board of Somos Liberación, (a publication of MCL) and was a section chief editor for IXTHYS magazine. Since 2013, she actively participates in several international forums such as the United Nations Human Rights Council, the European Parliament, the United States Senate, the Organization of American States, the Summits of the Americas, and various national parliaments.
