“Circus can be more entertaining and accessible to the public than other art forms, and that makes it more fun to perform and connect with audiences.”
Duo Straight Up is Nick Lowery and Rachel Randall. Nick began his sideways stumble into the world of circus at Oberlin College, where he began juggling and performing in a student circus troupe, OCircus! He completed his degree in mathematics in 2009, then found his way to the School of Acrobatics & New Circus Arts (SANCA) in Seattle, where he took up Chinese pole and met Rachel.
Rachel discovered circus when she joined Professor Bud’s Mini Circus in Yakima, Washington. She brings a lifetime of experience and grace as an ice skater, gymnast, and professional dancer. She has danced in the USA, Canada, UK, and Ghana, as an independent artist and for companies such as Seattle Opera.
After they started dating, Rachel joined Nick’s Chinese pole class to spend more time with him. They began working on a duet that is as playful as it is sensual and mirrors their real life romance. Their act has been charming audiences since 2014.
Nick and Rachel have performed at the Vancouver Circus Festival; the e.g. Conference in Carmel, California; at SANCA’s gala show “Up, with a Twist” at Teatro Zinzanni, in Seattle; and Pacific Northwest Ballet’s “Backstage Bash” at McCaw Hall.
