Nadine Strossen

“Women are not little children. Women are not weak, not victims. Pleasure and danger go together, of course they do. We want the pleasure, and we can cope with danger.”

Nadine Strossen, a chaired professor at New York Law School, is a leading constitutional law and civil liberties scholar and activist. The immediate past President of the American Civil Liberties Union (1991-2008), she now serves on the ACLU’s National Advisory Council, as well as the Advisory Boards of EPIC (Electronic Privacy Information Center), FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education), and Heterodox Academy. She also has served on the Board of Human Rights Watch. When Strossen stepped down as ACLU President, three Supreme Court Justices (Ginsburg, Scalia, and Souter) participated in her farewell/tribute event. The National Law Journal has named Strossen one of America’s "100 Most Influential Lawyers," and several other national publications have named her one of the country’s most influential women. A frequent media commentator, she has published widely in both academic journals and general interest publications, including the New York Times, Washington Post, and USA Today. Strossen’s 1995 book, Defending Pornography: Free Speech, Sex, and the Fight for Women’s Rights was named a New York Times “notable book” of that year. Her 2018 book, HATE: Why We Should Resist it With Free Speech, Not Censorship, has earned accolades from ideologically diverse experts.
