“An architect must be a social artist.”
Moshe Safdie is a leading architect, urban planner, educator, theorist, and author, who explores the essential principles of socially responsible design with a distinct visual language. Beginning with his architectural thesis at McGill University in 1964 and first built project, the seminal Habitat ’67 in Montréal, Canada, Safdie’s catalogue of work has contributed to the dialogue on sustainable urbanism and contemporary architectural practice.
With his Somerville, Massachusetts–based firm, Safdie Architects, recent projects include Mamilla Center in Jerusalem, Israel; Marina Bay Sands in Singapore; Khalsa Heritage Centre in Punjab, India; and the United States Institute of Peace headquarters in Washington, DC.
Safdie has worked with a wide range of clients, including municipal entities and government agencies, colleges and universities, private developers, and non-profit organizations and civic institutions. Many of his firm’s buildings have become beloved regional and national landmarks, including Exploration Place Science Center, Wichita, Kansas; Salt Lake City Public Library, Salt Lake City, Utah; Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts; Springfield Federal Courthouse, Springfield, Massachusetts; Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, California; Lester B. Pearson International Airport, Toronto, Canada; and Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum, Jerusalem, Israel.
Safdie continues to inspire the theory and application of ideas about housing, mixed use, and high density in cities around the world.
