“If we let children see science as something attractive, not necessarily to devote themselves to it, but to feed their curiosity and desire to learn, that will change their way to see the world and what can be done and improved.”
Luis Roberto Flores Castillo is a Computer Engineer with a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the UNAM, and a Master’s degree and a PhD in Physics from the University of Pittsburgh.
He worked at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in the study of the asymmetry between matter and antimatter. Since 2004 he works at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland, first associated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison and currently as team leader of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and member of the Joint Consortium for Fundamental Physics in Hong Kong.
His work at CERN has focused on the search, and now the study, of the Higgs boson. For his outstanding contribution in the discovery of this particle, the Mexican Society of Physics bestowed upon him the Scientific Research Award in 2012.
He has also directed working groups at CERN focused on the search for exotic particles and, before his activity at Fermilab and CERN, worked in modeling the visuomotor system of amphibians and the use of artificial neural networks in astronomy. Currently, he works on the preparations for the second data collection period of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
