Kevin Briggs

“What would you do if your family member, friend or loved one was suicidal? What would you say? Would you know what to say? In my experience, it's not just the talking that you do, but listening […] By just being there, you may just be the turning point that they need.”

Sergeant Kevin R. Briggs recently retired from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), after 23 years of service.  Prior to the CHP, Sgt. Briggs worked at San Quentin State Prison, and was also an active member of the United States Armed Forces. Additionally, Briggs is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Crisis Negotiation Course.

Today Kevin is an active expert in efforts to promote Crisis Management, Leadership Skills and Suicide Intervention and Prevention worldwide. He continues public speaking and teaching at conferences, law enforcement departments across the country, including the FBI, and he consults and advises major companies and corporations.

His story and experiences has been featured at the TED 2014 conference, The New Yorker Magazine, Men’s Health Magazine, NBC Nightly News, NPR’s Bob Edwards Radio Show and People Magazine.

Kevin Briggs’ personal story includes being a cancer survivor, overcoming heart issues and divorce. He knows through family experience the role depression can play in a person’s life. He is also a survivor of suicide loss. He’s proud to have the opportunity to speak and to help educate on the challenges of mental illness.
