Dr. Gerardo Ceballos is a full-time “C” researcher at the Ecology Institute of UNAM, institution where he has worked since 1989. He studied Biology at the Autonomous Metropolitan University, did a Master’s degree at the University of Wales and a PhD at the University of Arizona.
His academic interests include animal ecology, biogeography and conservation of vertebrates. Ceballos has carried out conservation projects aimed at protecting species and ecosystems, among which are: Proposal for the establishment of the Biosphere Reserve Chamela-Cuixmala, Jalisco; Assessment of the conservation status of mammals of Mexico; Creation of the flora and fauna Lerma Marshes protection area; Proposal for the creation of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve and also for Biosphere Reserve Janos-Casas Grandes in Chihuahua.
He is a member of several scientific societies such as the Mexican Academy of Sciences, the American Association for Ecology and the Mexican Association of Mammalogy. He has published more than 85 scientific and popular articles, and has written more than 20 books. He has also worked in more than 60 technical studies for various governments, private and academic national and international institutions.
