Dan Ariely

“We are discovering that a lie is a social dynamic, and is in that frame in which what is acceptable or not is decided.”

He is B. Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University, with appointments in the Fuqua School of Business, the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, the School of Medicine and the Department of Economics. He also the founder of the Center for Advanced Hindsight and Co-Founder of BEworks, a company that provides scientific assessment for strategic decision-making on topics like energy, insurances and many others. His goal is to study how people actually act in the marketplace, as opposed to how they should or would perform if they were completely rational. His interests span a wide range of daily behaviors such as saving (or not), buying (or not), medical decision-making, pain management, procrastination, dishonesty and decisionmaking under different emotional states to gain a better understanding of our ability to make decisions: he identifies the places where we fall short, in order to better design products, interventions and policies. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in psychology from Tel Aviv University, a Master’s and a Doctorate in cognitive psychology from the University of North Carolina, and a Doctorate in business administration from Duke University. After graduating from Duke in 1998, he took a position at MIT, where he was the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Behavioral Economics (with a break when he was a member at the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton). Over the years he has published his research in psychology, economics, medical, and business in academic journals and also he has written general audience books as: Predictably Irrational, The Upside of Irrationality, The Honest Truth about Dishonesty and Payoff.
