“My parents have created a nurturing space for me. They also expose me to a lot of things. They always want me to learn something new. My dad gives me articles from Time magazine and The Wall Street Journal to read. We also travel a lot, so our eyes have been open to the world from a young age.”
Cassandra Lin is a young environmentalist, high school student from Westerly, RI, philanthropist, and social entrepreneur most popular for founding Project TGIF (Turn Grease Into Fuel).
TGIF is a sustainable program that recycles waste cooking oil from residents and restaurants which has a refiner convert it into biodiesel fuel, while profits are then donated to help heat the homes of more needy families.
To date, Project TGIF has helped collect over 140,000 gallons of cooking grease, generated over 110,000 gallons of biodiesel, which has helped offset over 2 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, as well as helped heat the homes of 290 families in Rhode Island and Connecticut.
Lin’s team also helped introduce and pass a bill in the state of Rhode Island that mandates that all businesses recycle their used cooking oil. Lin was named one of the Top Ten Volunteers of the Year by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in 2011.
She also was selected as one of the 25 Most Powerful and Influential Young People in the World by Huffington Post in May, 2012 and as one of three Young Wonders by the CNN Heroes program in December, 2012. Most recently Lin was selected as 2014 Caring Award Young Adult Winner.
