He is a British neuroscientist and Professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience at the University of Sussex and founding co-director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science. He is also a Wellcome Trust Engagement Fellow, a Senior Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, and the 2017 president of the British Science Association (psychology section).
Anil’s research seeks to understand the biological basis of consciousness by bringing together many scientific and clinical disciplines. He holds an MA from Cambridge University (1996), a Ph.D from the University of Sussex (2000), and he was a Research Fellow at the Neuroscience Institute of San Diego (2001-2007).
He has published more than 110 research papers and is editor-in-chief of the Neuroscience of Consciousness journal (Oxford University Press). Furthermore, he is also editor and co-author of 30 Second Brain (2014), and was a consultant for the book Eye Benders, winner of the 2014 Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize. He is committed to public engagement and contributes to many media publications that appear in the New Scientist, The Guardian, and the BBC (for which he was profiled by The Life Scientific). He lives by the sea in Brighton and is currently writing his first book.
