Prof Madrigal began his medical career in Mexico and subsequently undertook a WHO Fellowship at Harvard University’s Dana Farber Cancer Institute; followed by a PhD degree at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London. He was awarded the Stanford Dean’s Fellowship and a Leukemia Society Fellowship whilst a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Stanford University. He created the Anthony Nolan Research Institute and leading as Scientific Director since 1995. He has held the Academic Chair of Hematology at the Royal Free Hospital and University College London since 1997.
Today, Madrigal is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and has acted as International Advisor representing Mexico since 2011. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and in May 2015 was appointed as Country Advisor for Mexico. He has been in chaarge of UCL Pro-Provost for the Americas since 2011 and in 2015 became Pro-Vice-Provost for the Americas. In 2013 he was elected as a Fellow of the prestigious Academy of Medical Sciences and in 2014 as a Member of the Mexican Academy of Surgery.
Madrigal is an internationally respected and influential scientist in the field of stem cell transplantation, and histocompatibility and immunogenetics, whose seminal research work has been the platform on which many recent advances in bone marrow transplantation have depended.
He has published over 570 papers and has received several awards and prizes.
