“If there is any power in architecture, it is the the power of synthesis. The more complex the issue the more need for synthesis”
This Chilean architect studied in the Catholic University of Chile and carried out several studies about theory and history at the IUAV in Venice. In 1994, he established his own office, Alejandro Aravena Arquitectos. He was Professor at Harvard University where he founded ELEMENTAL along with Andrés Iacobelli. Since 2001, he runs this company that focuses on public interest and social impact projects such as housing, public space, infrastructure and transport.
After the earthquake and tsunami that affected Chile in 2010, ELEMENTAL was called to work in the reconstruction of Constitución City, where they had to integrate all their previous experiences. The proposal they developed was later applied to other cities where the urban design was used to solve political and social conflicts.
Alejandro was curator of the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale and later won the Pritzker Prize in 2016.
