A Whole Day Dedicated to Philosophy

World Philosophy Day fosters a world wide culture of debating philosophical topics

World Philosophy Day has been celebrated the third Thursday of November every year since the year 2005, though originally introduced by UNESCO in 2002. In Greek, the word philosophy or philo sophia can be translated to the love of wisdom. The study of philosophy tries to understand the meaning of life, examining the nature of reality and existence, what is or is not possible to know, and behaviour being wrong or right.

The purpose of World Philosophy Day is as the UN website states:

  1. to renew the national, subregional, regional and international commitment to philosophy;

  2. to foster philosophical analysis, research and studies on major contemporary issues, so as to respond more effectively to the challenges that are confronting humanity today;

  3. to raise public awareness of the importance of philosophy and its critical use in the choices arising for many societies from the effects of globalization or entry into modernity;

  4. to appraise the state of philosophy teaching throughout the world, with special emphasis on unequal access;

  5. to underline the importance of the universalization of philosophy teaching for future generations.

UNESCO’s goal in creating World Philosophy Day is to foster a world wide culture of debating philosophical topics in regard to human dignity and diversity. The beauty of philosophy is that it encourages us to constantly be in question and to reflect on reflection itself, and now there is a day dedicated to just that.

Throughout history, philosophy has given birth to creativity, ideas, the establishment of values and morals, perspectives on life, and a manner of analysis. World Philosophy Day, this year celebrated on November 16th, in combination with Ciudad de las Ideas and Andres Roemer’s personal philosophy of inspiring ideas, ensures that philosophy remains an important part of our human story.
