Humans Do Not Behave as Primates

share

Isabel Behncke shares her observations on how primates’ behavior can define how humans should behave.

For years, scientists have studied primates’ behavior to determine the origins of our own evolution, and they have reached conclusions that redefine the concept humans have of their own behavior.

Isabel Behncke explains us the result of her observations and studies on bonobos and chimpanzees. These primates’ societies have vertical, aggressive, dominance-based hierarchical structures; no differently from other species, however, what characterizes them is the way their members interact to maintain said hierarchy.

Apparently, what generates a good relationship between the members of those societies is trust. A society that trusts itself is more functional and has no conflicts; but, what is the secret of these primates? It is as simple as playing.

If humans could play all the time, our society would function in a more agile way, more fluent; and we would trust more in others. Besides, Behncke has demonstrated that primates have not only generated trust in their society, but also empathy, which makes them more aware of the others’ status. Something humans really could use.

Isabel Behncke has carried out these studies for years, and if primates, which is supposedly where we come from, can live in a harmonious organized way, it is inconceivable that humans haven’t been able to achieve that after so many years of evolution. We must consider the others, we must play more, we must trust people that surround us, but, more importantly, we must be more aware of everyone else’s situations. This will help us to be better persons, therefore, to generate a better society.
