Cooter is pioneer in the field of Law and Economics. He is coeditor of the International Review of Law and Economics, and one of the founders of the American Law and Economics Association, where he also served as President from 1994 to 1995.
He began teaching in the Department of Economics at the University of California in Berkeley in 1975, and joined the Boalt Hall in 1980. He has been a visiting member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and has received several awards and honorary appointments, including the Guggenheim fellowship, the Jack N. Pritzker Visiting Research Professorship at the School of Law of Northwestern University and, more recently, the Max Planck Research Prize.
In 1999, he was elected by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Robert has published a wide variety of articles of private law, constitutional and economic law and economic development law. He has also written books, such as Law and Economics with Thomas Ulen and Solomon's Knot: How Law Can End the Poverty of Nations with Hans-Bernd Schäfer, which has been translated into several languages.
