Writer and humorist known for being the author of The Ethicist column in The New York Times Magazine from 1999 to 2011. He holds a BA in Music from the University of Albany and, later, earned the MFA in musical composition at the California Institute of the Arts. Cohen categorically rejects the idea of individuals being inherently good or bad, and holds that all individuals have the ability to do good and bad in different times and contexts. Due to his great knowledge of ethical dilemmas, Cohen provides answers to ethical questions to his listeners on All Things Considered, broadcasted by the National Public Radio. He was also a columnist of Slate magazine, where he became famous for News Quiz.
He wrote 950 episodes of Late Night with David Letterman for over seven years. His greatest contribution was the invention of the Top Ten List in the same program.
He is the author of The Good, the Bad and the Difference: How to Tell Right from Wrong in Everyday Situations, and a compilation of stories and humorous pieces entitled Diary of a Flying Man. He has won three Primetime Emmy Awards.
